Why fleets switch to lithium
The manufacturer's advantages are operational, not cosmetic. Lithium batteries charge fast — the industrial battery record puts a full charge at 1 to 2 hours, with the time achieved in practice set by the pack's capacity and the paired charger's current — and accept opportunity charging at any break, so one battery lasts through two or even three shifts. There are no hazardous fumes or acid spills, battery watering is eliminated, and the battery never leaves the truck for charging, which frees the battery room for productive use. The packs also operate in cold storage and freezers, and cycle life is 2 to 3 times that of lead-acid.
The industrial battery listing puts numbers on the outcome: fast charging together with the longer lifetime of lithium iron phosphate contributes to a 20-25% reduction in operating costs over the life of the lift truck, with around 40% less energy consumed during charging than the lead-acid routine it replaces.
